The Chocolate Room

This morning I took the remainder the stuff I’m not bringing home with me to my storage unit, and boy is my room empty. Actually I am using the laptop as my main computer right now at my desktops are all packed up as well. This evening I am going to do some serious studying for my classes Maritime Affairs, and Computer Science Programming (my two first finals on Friday). Other then that I am really psyched about coming home in seven days. Lets just hope these last few days go well.
I also spent the last of my panther points (we can use them to buy stuff at the grocery store on campus) I bought basically 50 dollars worth of candy. Hey I figured why not. Plus I'll have snacks for the train ride. Rampaging through the isle grabbing every last snickers, milky way, and fast break, I could not help imagining myself in Wily Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Floating down the chocolate river, flying to the top of the ceiling or turning into a blueberry. Ahhhh the candy.

The life of an engineer

An engineering student is walking along, when a fellow student arrives on a new bicycle. "Impressed", he asks, "Where did you get that beautiful bicycle?"

"Well," the second engineering student says, "A couple of days ago I was just walking along when this georgeous blonde pulls up, hops off the bike, rips off all her clothes, and says 'take what you want'."

The other engineering student nods and says "Good choice. The clothes probably wouldn't have fit anyway."

Part IV
"The N-word"

This particular section of ITOOLM is actually a movie. In case you are unfamiliar with the Chappelle show. It's a sketch comedy show shown on Comedy Central.

The particular clip examines the N-Word as I will call it, and its use in the world today. As I have now been down here in PV for over a year I have been know to use it. The question is, is the N-Word inappropriate and if it is when is it inappropriate?... What if you used the N-Word for other people, would it be so bad? Follow the link and wait its a rather large download.

N-Word Family Movie

As funny as the movie is, It does present a good point.

Basically I don’t need to say anything else about it Just watch it and enjoy.

Part III
“Sok Weeze teech Ya”

This story takes me back to my days in STEM.

It was June ninth, 2004 three days after my High School Graduation, and I was about to enter my first College class Math 1113 or Analytical Geometry, with some guy named Dr. Freddie Frazier. Escorted by my parents, and already late for class, as my plane had just touched down in Bush International Airport about an hour earlier, I knocked on the closed door of Room 106 hoping this Frasier guy would not be pissed off for being late to his class.

The door opened…

And out walked (in my opinion) an old man dressed up prettier than could be.

“What can I do for you?” he asked with crackle in his throat and a deep southern farm accent.

“I’m Brian Gruening, is this (I looked down at my schedule) Math 1113?”.

“Why you Betcha come on in”.
Now I normally do just fine in front of crowds, in fact I rather enjoy it, but this was different. Dr. Frasier led my parents and I into the obvious math room. “Hav’a seat”. I sat down in the closest seat (the first row). Dr. Frasier then turned to my parents. “You folks r welcome ta sit in and listen to the class, get a little taste of Dr. Frasier”. Ok I had only met the man two minutes earlier and he had already invited my parents to sit through my college pre-calculus class and see what it was like. Either the man was as cool as can be or he was going to be a bitch, I thought.

“Ok I gots ta axe ya, where you from son” Dr Frasier pondered along with the (I’m sure) confused class of all black students.

“Wisconsin” I said as politely as possible ever so aware of my surroundings. “Youze done com a long way now hant ya?, well youll like er here at Prairie View, Now weeze got some mat ta do”.

And just as fast as I had been introduced Dr. Fraiser was up at that black board with a pice of chalk working problems. Luckily I had brought a notepad and pen with me, as I tried to frantically copy his examples.

Somewhere about half way through the two hour class, Freddie Frasier, finishing a problem, walked over to me and extended his fist out in front of me and excididly said

“Hit me One”.

"Hit me one"? Thoughts of a well placed Math Teacher's head at a Gallagher show ran through my head. Dumbfounded as to why he had his fist out in front of my face. He looked at me, I looked over my shoulder looking for another class member to give me some hint of what was going on. With no reinforcement from the class I looked up into Freddie’s think framed glasses, down at his still extended fist, back up to his eyes.

After what seemed like an eternity I extended my hand toward his in the traditional hand-shake formation, when.

He and the class burst our into laughter. Regaining his composure Freddie and my black class mates thought me my first Black southern handshake. Entitled the “Hit me One”

Since that day I have come to know Dr. Frasier as a good friend, one of the best teachers in the world. As I have never been an excellent math student (actually taking Algebra 2 twice in high school) but this man can teach math. I ended my first semester of college knowing everything there is to know about Pre-Calculus and Algebra.

I would later find out that this Dr. Frasier is world renown as one of the best math instructors of all time. Teaching the math professors at such universities as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and MIT the Frasier way of teaching math.

The Frog Prince

A man was crossing a road one day when a frog called out to him and said: "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess".
He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket. The frog spoke up again and said: "If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful princess, I will stay with you for one week."
The man took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket. The frog then cried out: "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll stay with you and do ANYTHING you want". Again the man took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.
Finally, the frog asked: "What is the matter ? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess, that I'll stay with you for a week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me ?"
The man said, "Look I'm a software engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog is cool."

After a long day of updating the [UAV] website to no avail in the eyes of most of the members, I came to the conclusion [UAV] would best be run by those who have the proper time and energy to devote a large part of their every day lives to its upkeep. I mean I have enough stuff to do right now among working for NASA, Upcoming Finals, Navy. Therefore I submitted the following post over at the [UAV]Forums and website. Some of you older readers may recognize the speech.

Effective 0000 April 18th 2005,

This post should mark the 80th time I have contributed to this forum as the President of [UAV] The Unstoppable Allied Vanguards. In the past few days, however, it has become evident to me that I no longer have a strong enough following to justify continuing in that effort. I have never been a quitter. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. But as President, I must put the interest of [UAV] first.

Therefore I [UAV]Cockat00 shal resign my title of President, and take on the new title of Co-Founder. In my place, Vice President [UAV]Valkyrie will be taking over. In passing this office to the Vice President, I also do so with the profound sense of the weight of responsibility that will accompany the position, and wish him and his newly appointed staff the best of luck.

Upon my resignation, I will be focusing mainly upon the coding of the main website, as well as moderating the Quakecon section of the forums. Under the direct jurisdiction of the new president and selected staff. I wish only to maintain an active part in the Hosting of Lan Parties, Quakecon related topics, and the main webpage.

To have served in this office is to have felt a very personal sense of kinship with each and every [UAV] Member. In leaving it, I do so with this saying "Long live the Fighters of [UAV]".

Co-Founder
[UAV]Cockat00

Part II
"Pork, Chicken, Watermelon and Cool Aid for Everyone"

We have all seen the stereotypical black person on Comedy Central, holding a bucket of KFC in one arm and a big old watermelon in the other. What we don’t realize at though, is that stereotypical black guy on Comedy Central is (in actuality) not that far off from the real thing. This is a story about “Chicken Nights” in the cafeteria. Just for your information today, coincidently today happens to be civil rights day.

*Note this blog is not intended in any way shape or form in any to be racist or bias*

Once a week down at the cafeteria Sodexo (our food service provider) holds soul food day. Soul food down here means in a literal sense Black food day. On these “special days” the break down of the food offered goes a little something like this.

Sunday dinner, and boy was I actually hungry for once, skipping breakfast or actually sleeping through breakfast, as I normally do on Sundays, I hadn’t eaten anything since Saturday diner. I handed (by now after three semesters worn down) id card to the lunch lady, and proceeded into the already packed cafeteria. A cafeteria with bad food packed ten minutes after opening can only mean one thing,….. Soul food day.
Looking around the miscellaneous lines pondering what to eat, to my left Fried Chicken, Pork, or Chit lens. To my right OX hooves, Chicken legs and the all exclusive watermelon table. Ever have the feeling you just don’t fit in, and everybody is watching you to see what you end up taking back to your seat? Yeah well, skipping right passed the overcrowded hot food lines consisting mainly of hundreds of fried chicken crazed brothers pushing and shoving for that last gizzard, and proceeding right to the watermelon and desert lines I hear in the background “Cracker boy what’ya eat’n night?...”White boy gotto love the corn bread.” Mostly good nature puns that don’t mean much anymore as there are only so many insults out there for white people and I think I have heard them all now.
Sitting down with my heaping plate of dry cake and watermelon I choose an open seat fairly secluded from the rest of the student body and try to pound down the world’s driest cake. Once and a while a young girl will walk past “Hi how you doin” or “where you from” they’ll say” …..”Fine Wisconsin. Ill answer which is normally followed by sometime of question ….”Wow how did you end up here”… I choose one of many prewritten responses I have developed in response to that very question. “NAVY, NASA, STEM” something along those matters. Did I mention during this time 300 sets of wondering southern eyes find there way to my table with a look of either confusion or astonishment. Upon taking my empty plates up to the kitchen and walking out the doors my body finds itself glad to have made it our alive. There are these great Bugs bunny Cartoons where bugs asks Elmer if he ever had the feeling he was bein watched? And Elmer looks at camera with a scared face and runs away screaming.

“Presumably back to his house where he puts his nose inside his calculus book and studies the rest of the night”.

Part I
“I’m just as black as you are white”

About half way through my fall semester of 2004 as I washed my hands in the MSC men’s bathroom anticipating another tasteless meal in the cafeteria. I was approached by a Prairie View student (black of course) who seemed to be either a freshman or sophomore at most. He looked at me through the actually clean mirror and bluntly exclaimed “What are you doing here? This is posed to be an’all black skoo?”…….I continued to wash my hands pretending to be deaf. “Y’a hears me, What’ya doin here”?...... drying my hands on the brown paper bag towel, I turned to him and edgily stated, “I’m just as black as you are white”, and proceeded to dinner. I did not know it at the time, but that incident back in the bathroom of the MSC would change my outlook upon attending college at Prairie View A&M University.

I spent the rest of that week replaying the Bathroom incident over and over in my head. Like a broken record it just replayed and replayed over and over. I tried everything I could to get that young man and his words out of my mind tossing, turning at night, surfing the internet playing doom. I tried telling my self, he was just a rude probably undereducated kid who didn’t know any difference, but when all was said and done that single young man who had insulted me, had driven home a damn good point. What was I doing here?

Well I’m still searching for the answer to that question, and I find new ones almost every day, but in reality the ultimate answer to my question has not specific answer. But is a series of stories and events.

As a conservative, white Northerner attending a liberal, black Southern school; I have a certain different perspective upon life then I did only seven months ago. When I graduated High School as a somewhat sheltered kid of seventeen years of age, Boy Scout, uber Star Trek fan, computer nerd, crazy aerospace enthusiast with a nothing special GPA. I was everything the popular kids weren’t. And while I had a distinguished career in every thing in enjoyed like Computers, Boy Scouts, Aeronautics; and had been on the front page of the paper in numerous occasions. I was still the kid everybody thought was (for his age older then anyone else my age) and could go somewhere in life be it either cubicle or Fighter Pilot most likely ending up like Bill Gates.

Today my sheltered ego of high school has somewhat vanished and been replaced with the harsh reality of the world outside Wisconsin just as many college students find. You could say, my blinded view of the world has opened, and the science fiction dreams of my childhood have been replaced with the realistic life goals. The following stories will try to depict what its like being the only person on campus like me, and try to answer the question. What am I doing here?

Warm Twinkies

You know those days where one little or big thing can really change your perspective for a little while? Well today was one of those days. My little glimmer of hope came in the form of a good Grade. On the revised version of that Ageia PhysX Processer paper I posted a couple days ago, I got the higest grade in the class an 88. Now I am not one to brag but damn, Kind of makes me feel all warm and goozy on the inside,... kind of like a Twinkie heated up in the microwave. Tastey.....

Footsies

Up today nice and early for the Navy Physical Fitness test I got a quick game of quake in before walking down to the track (it always gets my blood going). Anyway I passed but my bruised foot that has been giving me problems for the last week is really acting up today. I think tomorrow I might go and have it looked at. Hopefully it’s nothing serious and it will heal itself, if not oh well I don’t have to run five miles in the morning on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays Oh DARN.

As for the rest of the day, for whatever reason I am extremely tired right now. Chris my roommate was sick for a couple of days last week so I better not be getting that either. Still the day has gone pretty smoothly I finally kicked ass on a history test World War I and II. Probably because it was not southern black history of the slaves(no offence) I am just no used to learning history from that standpoint. European History is my game. Boy it’s a nice feeling knowing for sure that you answered at least 85% of the questions right, that has not happened down here in a while. Guess I’ll try to get some nap time in here since I really don’t have that much homework tonight.

Oh yeah and ITOOLM is finding its way from my memory back to the paper, I am goin to finish it on Friday or Saturday. So look for it posted on Monday.

How do you like your human?

Well this morning I awoke the pleasant morning glow of, the moon and stars with an air temperature or 40 degrees. The time on my silver Emerson Atomic Clock read 0345 and I was about to get on a bus drive two hours to a high school NJROTC Physical Fitness Drill meet in Beaumont. I meandered my way across the deserted campus toward the NROTC building for 0400 muster. It’s only a two minute walk but it seems like an eternity at four in the morning. Anyway being the first one there I picked a place along the buildings wall neat the entrance and popped a lean against it in the time it took for the other to leave and the time I first perched myself against the wall I cant remember a thing which lead me to believe that sleep got the best of me. I awoke, still standing, to the voice of our Sergeant .."Gruening let’s go". Luckily for me Sergeant let us sleep on the way there.
As the blazing Texas sun crept ever higher into the cloudless sky, and the sanctuaries of shadows disappeared, Ultraviolet rays began to Crispin my pale white computer geek skin. And by 1200 my skin had already turned a dark pink despite the spf 50 sun block given to me. By the time I was able to find some shelter inside the building the only word that exists that could describe me feeling and appearance is Texas Fried Human. Now as I sit in front of my computer, I’m keeping an extra eye pealed. Since I must look very appetizing to any passing cannibal. I think its time for some lotion its going to be a long night.

In better news my preordered Expansion pack to Doom 3, “Resurrection of Evil” shipped today and I should have it by Tuesday. God I cant wait to play it.

Just a little Paper

Heres a quick paper I wrote on Ageias new PhiysX processer I cant wait to see what it can do. By the way I lost half of this thing when my flash drive died the other day. Now I have to get working on rewriting what I lost of ITOOLM.

“Star Treks Holodecks Come One Step Closer”

After decadendless debates about listening about Central Processing Units (CPU), and years of listening about Graphic Processing Units (GPU) it is time to learn the new term the revolutionary Physics Processing Unit (PPU). The dawn of the Physics Processing Unit (PPU) has arrived and gaming will never be the same with Ageia's hardware-accelerated physics technologies. Bridging the gap between beautiful virtual worlds and responsive physical reality, Ageia’s PPU allows for almost unlimited creative possibilities in game play and development. The new PPU is re-igniting enthusiasm in both gamers and game creators alike, and propelling the game industry into unexplored new future markets.
Who is making the PPU and why? “Consumer expectations for immersive interactive gaming demand a new class of processor the PPU which has been created to meet this demand” (Technologies). Just as some of the worlds greatest inventions came into existence, floppy disks, cell phones the PPU is the direct result of Star Trek. Curtis Davis President of Ageia technologies, “We wanted to do something we could finally experience, we finally chose creating a holo-deck like experience for games, coming up with the specifications wasn't too hard - we just had grab some beer and re-watch a couple of the Star Trek shows” (Pemberton). Ageia is a small company based in Silicon Valley California that specializes in physics and their implementation in games.

What then is this PPU? “The Physics Processing Unit is a dedicated processing unit that was built from the ground up to accelerate the algorithms required for physically based simulations”(Pemberton). The PPU itself is a silicon based semiconductor much like that of a modern day Pentium Four, but instead of controlling the main function of the computer like the
Pentium chips, the PPU only associates itself with games, specifically the physics of games. Controlling events such as explosions and spontaneous events.
What’s so important about game physics? Today’s game programmers are pushing the limits of current hardware which (until recently) has not seen a major upgrade in game graphics and development for the better part of a decade. Epic Games director Tim Sweeny, “This is about the time that an industry-changing idea takes from first implementation to industry wide change including hardware adoption” (Pemberton). The current trend among game developers is to use software-based physics engines such as Novadex to enable objects and characters to interact in a real-world manner and provide stunning graphical effects. John Carmack lead programmer of Id software,” We’re still doing basically trivial things…in future game generations there will be simulations of dust motes going through the air and transferring through the environment” (QuakeCon Keynote). However, without a hardware-based dedicated chip (the PPU) to compute these detailed images, physics hardware, and game developers is limited to lines of code and are unable to fully unleash the power of physics and graphics on today’s computers.
What does the PPU have in store for the future games? Ageia’s incomplete experimental chip is already breaking records. To measure the performance of games a total of three areas are looked at. Frame rate, Anti-Aliasing, Maximum Resolution. Frame rate is defined as the number
of individual frames the monitor shows per second (just like a movie projector). Anti-Alaising, how sharp the objects within the game are. And Maximum resolution, how many pixels are outputted to the monitor. In each of the categories the higher the number the better. Although Ageia has not yet released any physical numbers regarding the actual performance increases Ageia researchers are expecting a definitive difference between a non physics enabled game and physics enabled game (White Paper).
Will it increase intractability? A major advantage of the PPU is its ability to process spontaneous events within games. Hedge CEO of Ageia defines the PPU interactability,
There is intractability in a very special way, so if you are driving a car in a car game and you have this irrational desire to just drive your car off a cliff and hit the rocks, often the game designer will not let you do that because that would require allot of physical simulation processing power, but the PPU allows this to happen and the gamer is free to indulge themselves (Yu Interview).
This is a major break through in game technology allowing the player to interact with the game environment in a seemingly infinite way. The traditional practices of game programmers is to confine the player to certain parameters set fourth by hardware imitations. The PPU will all but eliminate these environmental confines creating limitless realms of game play and interactive environments.
Exactly how does this new technology work? The PPU itself will be implemented into computers much the same was a current day video cards are. The cards will look and operate much like that of the video card using the same type of Double Data Rate Three memory, PCI interfaces and cooling fans The chip is placed on an expansion card, made by a third party

company, with (PCI or PCI Express) interfaces that allow the chip to connect to the motherboard and thus links it to the computer. This unique interface also allows the new technology to be used
in older computer systems, and for maximum upgradeability. As new more powerful PPU’s hit the market older ones can simply be replaced or upgraded with a turn of the screwdriver. The
PPU will function as part of what is being called by Ageia, the “Gaming Triangle”. A combination of CPU GPU and PPU for maximum realism in game play.
When will it be available? Ageia is currently working in conjunction with major manufactures of computer parts, most notably graphics card producing super giants NVIDIA and ATI. Under the current plan Ageia will outsource the chip itself to companies interested in producing the interface to connect the chip to current computers. From there the company will have free reign of what to incorporate into the card it makes. While each company will still be using the same base chip, they will fight to produce a better card driving both production and retail cost down. According to Curtis Davis, “You can look for the new chip this Christmas expect prices to be much like that of a medium end video card ”(Yu Interview).
What game developers will use this technology? Ageia Technologies has a long history creating software based physics programs with leading game developers such as Epic and Id makers of the highly successful games Unreal Tournament and Doom 3. As many games already incorporate Ageia’s software based physics engine Novodex, it is only a matter of time until
games are made specifically with the chip in mind. “Epics Unreal Tournament Three game engine is right now being developed in conjunction with the PPU and is physics technology”

(Pemberson). Although only major game producers are adopting the technology right now, the technology is still new and has not been implemented fully into the game development sphere.
Look for the PPU and its Physics technology to become a standard part of games in the near future.
What does this mean for Game developers and coding? As the hardware that plays the games continuers to develop so does the software code or “Game Engine” that makes up the
games. The basic fundamentals of game programming have changed little from their ancient predecessors. A basic object oriented code that interacts with the hardware to produce the actual game. The PPU has a unique feature, Novodex software, which allows it to communicate with games; it can tell the game code to give physics based events to the card for processing. “A Novodex-enabled game will sense the presence of the PhysX chip and use the technology, Hedge said, and offload the physics burden from the other two chips” ("Physics Accelerator"). Instead of learning new code, programmers only have to remember they are no longer limited by software based physics and that of current hardware.
Why should I buy one? For the avid gamer the PPU will become just as important as the speed of the CPU or the power of the GPU. Completing the ”Gaming triangle”, the PPU will be able to create previously unimaginable realism, quality, interactability, and speed in games and do so for around the price of a new video card. The wave of the future has just been created and the games along with it, how fast is your computer?
Move over CPU and GPU because the PPU is here and its revolutionizing the way we write the game code, create Game Engines, the way we market games, and most important redefining the way we play games . Games will never be the same with performance increases
in; super realistic environments where the player can interact with the game environment in any way imaginable, killer graphics as the GPU no longer has to handle processing the physics and
the video in games and speed, where the CPU can be fully devoted to controlling the link between devises in side the computer. Ageia’s PPU will become a vital part of any modern
gaming PC completing the vital third leg of the “Gaming Triangle” and bridging the gap between humans, computers and the games themselves.
